Garbage disposal repair in Peoria
It hums but won’t spin, it does nothing at all, or there is water in the cabinet under the sink. Many disposal problems can be fixed in minutes. When they can’t, a licensed plumber can repair the unit or install a new one, often the same day.

Why is my garbage disposal humming but not working?
A humming disposal has power but the grinding plate is jammed, usually by a fruit pit, bone, bottle cap or fibrous food. Turn off the power at the switch or unplug it, then use a quarter-inch hex wrench in the hole on the bottom of the unit to work the plate back and forth. If it is silent instead of humming, press the red reset button on the bottom.
Common garbage disposal problems
These are the symptoms plumbers hear about most, and what each one usually means.
Hums but won’t spin
Something is wedged between the plate and the grinding ring. A jam, not a dead motor.
Completely silent
A tripped reset button, breaker or GFCI, a loose plug or a bad wall switch.
Leaking from the top
The sink flange seal has loosened. Usually fixable without replacing the unit.
Leaking from the side
The dishwasher hose or the drain tube connection needs a new clamp or gasket.
Leaking from the bottom
Internal seals have failed. HomeTips and Angi both say this usually means replacement.
Runs but sink drains slowly
The clog is usually past the disposal, in the trap or the drain line.
How to unjam a disposal safely
This is the method plumbers use. Never put your hand inside the unit.
1
Cut the power
Turn off the wall switch and unplug the unit, or switch off its breaker if it is hard-wired.
2
Turn the plate by hand
Fit a quarter-inch hex wrench into the center hole on the bottom and work it back and forth until it turns freely.
3
Remove the object
Use tongs or pliers with a flashlight to pull out whatever caused the jam.
4
Reset and test
Press the red reset button, restore power, run cold water and switch it on.
Good to know: If the reset button keeps popping, you smell burning, or the breaker trips again, stop and call. That is an electrical problem.
Using a disposal in each Peoria
One city officially tells residents to skip the disposal. The other has old pipes that make careful use important.
PEORIA, ARIZONA
Peoria, Arizona: what your city says about disposals
The City of Peoria’s fats, oils and grease program puts it plainly: can the grease, scrape the plate, and catch the scraps. It asks residents to use a sink strainer and throw food scraps in the trash instead of using the garbage disposal, and warns that grease causes costly sewer backups into homes and overflows onto streets.
The city counts more than cooking oil as grease. Meat fats, butter, dairy, batters, dressings, icing and sauces all count. If you keep using a disposal, run strong cold water, feed small amounts, and keep all of those out of it.
- Pour cooled grease into a can and freeze it
- Wipe plates and pans before rinsing
- Use a strainer in the sink
- Run cold water, not hot, while grinding
PEORIA, ILLINOIS
Peoria, Illinois: old drains, slow sinks
Over half the houses in Peoria, IL date from before 1970, so many kitchen drains are cast iron or clay. InSinkErator, the disposal maker, says coffee grounds and eggshells are fine in small amounts but can build up in older plumbing if too much goes down at once. In an older Peoria kitchen, a slow sink with a working disposal is usually a clog in the trap or the drain line beyond it.
The Greater Peoria Sanitary District says never to pour grease down the drain and that most sewer backups start in the owner’s private line. If a disposal clog has grown into a main line backup, GPSD runs relief programs that may help with costs in some cases.
- Feed coffee grounds and eggshells slowly, if at all
- Never pour grease down the sink
- Slow sink with a working disposal: check the trap and drain
- Backup in a basement floor drain: it is the main line, not the disposal
Repair or replace your garbage disposal?
Angi suggests repairing a disposal that is 8 years old or younger and replacing one that is near 10 years.
Unjam or reset
Best for: humming or silent units
Freeing a jammed plate or resetting a tripped overload often brings the unit straight back.
Reseal or reconnect
Best for: top and side leaks
Tightening the mounting ring, resealing the sink flange or replacing the dishwasher hose clamp stops most leaks.
Electrical repair
Best for: dead units with good power
A failed switch, cord or GFCI outlet can be replaced without changing the disposal.
New disposal
Best for: bottom leaks, a burned-out motor or old age
A new unit is usually the better buy when the body leaks, the motor fails or the disposal is near the end of its life.

How pricing works when you call
- The dispatcher asks what is wrong so the plumber arrives prepared
- The plumber inspects and quotes a price before starting
- Any extra work is agreed with you before it is added
What should never go in a garbage disposal?
InSinkErator and the City of Peoria, AZ agree on the main offenders.
- Fats, oils and grease of any kind
- Bones, fruit pits and shells
- Fibrous foods like celery, corn husks and onion skins
- Pasta, rice and bread in large amounts, which swell
- Utensils, bottle caps and anything that is not food
Can you use a disposal with a septic tank?
The two main sources disagree, so here is each view. The EPA says a disposal can mean your septic tank needs pumping more often. InSinkErator says its disposals are safe for properly maintained septic systems and sells septic-specific models. Most homes inside both city limits are on public sewer, but if you are on septic in an outlying area, ask your septic service before adding a disposal.

The bottom line
A humming disposal is usually jammed, and a silent one usually needs a reset. Cut the power first, use a hex wrench, and never reach inside. A leak from the bottom or a dead motor means it is time for a new unit. In Peoria, AZ the city asks residents to keep grease and scraps out of the drain. In Peoria, IL older drains clog easily, so feed it slowly. If the quick fixes don’t work, call your city’s number for a licensed plumber.
